Most audiobook listeners today already pay for a subscription. Audible, Audioteka, Scribd, Storytel — the list is long, and the monthly cost is usually 10–20 USD.

So why would anyone want a separate place to store their own audiobooks, podcasts, music, and family recordings?

Why would anyone use a platform where you bring your own content?

The answer is simple:

Because subscription platforms give you access — but they don’t give you ownership.

And ownership matters more than people think.

1. Subscription platforms control your library — not you

Audible is fantastic for discovering new books. But your library inside Audible is not a real library:

We won’t.

The model is simple:

You pay only for the data you store.

  • No hidden fees
  • No upsells
  • No lock‑in

Just 0.05 USD per GB per month.

If your library is small, you pay very little. If your library grows, you pay more — but always fairly.

A typical family with 200 GB of audiobooks would pay:

200 GB × $0.05/GB = $10/month

That’s it.

And unlike Audible, your library stays yours forever.

6. Why this makes sense even if you already pay for Audible

Because Audible is a bookstore. own.audio is your library.

You use Audible to discover books. You’ll use own.audio to keep them.
